WOW… just WOW!! 😍
We knew Mateo was handsome, but we had no idea he would be this photogenic! This gorgeous boy, who is most likely a mix of just about every hound breed Cyprus has to offer, completely stole the show during his photoshoot.
Like far too many dogs on our island, Mateo started life as a stray. The lack of effective animal welfare laws, combined with irresponsible ownership, results in thousands of unwanted puppies being born every year. Mateo is one of the lucky ones. He was found before starvation claimed his life, and now he has a second chance.
Our only wish is that he doesn’t spend years waiting in a kennel for someone to notice him.
We estimate Mateo is around 2–3 years old. Although he’s fully grown, his playful, goofy personality shows he’s still very much a youngster. He weighs around 20kg, making him a lovely medium-to-large size.
His striking blue eyes are impossible to miss, but so is his beautiful white coat with rich orange markings. Orange isn’t a colour we often see in Cypriot hounds, and from the day he arrived we wondered if there was something else in his family tree. Looking at his head, loose skin around his face and neck, body shape and the way he moves, we can’t help but think there may be some Bracco ancestry somewhere along the line. Of course, with rescue dogs it’s impossible to know for certain—but whatever his mix is, it’s certainly a very handsome one!
Mateo is every bit the typical hound. His nose is almost permanently glued to the ground, following whichever scent has captured his attention. Calling his name? That usually falls on very selective ears! Freshly cooked meat, however, is a completely different story. It’s amazing what sausages and meatballs can achieve! 😂
He gets on well with other dogs and loves playing with both males and females. We’re happy to send videos of him playing if you’d like to see him in action. He loves to run, has the most wonderful hound howl, and enjoys cuddles, attention and plenty of praise.
There is one thing Mateo is very clear about though—cats are not his friends. He becomes far too excited when he sees one, so he will need a cat-free home.
Mateo would thrive with an active family, especially one living in a rural or semi-rural area where he can enjoy long walks and plenty of opportunities to use his incredible nose. He would make a wonderful companion for a family with children aged 7–8 years and older, simply because he’s a happy, bouncy, slightly clumsy boy who doesn’t always know where his feet are!
We regularly rehome our dogs to families across Europe, including the UK, Germany, Belgium and many other countries, so distance is not a barrier to giving Mateo the home he deserves.
